Rarawa Beach

Leaving the Awanui river and entering the Rangaunu harbour at daybreak was pretty magical signal-2026-08-22-06-28-40-951 A bit of mist, the tide well on its way out and a channel defined with marker posts still saw me beaching on shoals and having to retreat a few times. A huge sigh of relief as I came through the mouth before the tide had developed any current agin me. Loads of sting rays just inside the harbour.

The next goal was now in sight - Hauhora signal-2026-08-22-09-14-03-630 The sea was mirror smooth with small waves lapping on the beach so I was able to head straight for the headland confident that conditions wouldn't change significantly. Going around the headland the sea got a bit sloppy but not too intimidating although there was a few km where no landing was possible which had me focused. This feature at perforated point was impressive signal-2026-08-22-12-27-55-935 Soon after this I saw numerous Little Blue Penguins and a pod of Dolphins.

The DOC campsite at Rarawa Beach was within striking distance and after just over 8hours and 46km I am now relaxing there.
