Head of the Kaipara
The day started being completely fog bound
With an outgoing tide, the strength of which I was unsure, how far the fog extended into or perhaps completely across the Kaipara and that I wasn't far above the entrance. I headed off using the map/gps toward the opposite side pointed a km or so above Pouto point. The fog bank only extended ~500m and to my surprise a fishing boat appeared and was quietly trolling up the channel. I passed them and quickly became aware that the current was pretty strong. Long story short, the 5 1/2km ferry glide had me arrive a few hundred meters below Pouto point. The sun was out so I decided to chill for a couple of hours before starting to paddle up the edge of the Kaipara at midday, low tide was 2pm. Like yesterday the change of tide was quite dramatic and progress vastly improved. Was a little surprised to find a small seal colony as I rounded one of the headlands
Sandbanks extend way out at times so my passage was not straight forward but have reached the mouth of the Wairoa river and a nice spot to repose.
